Career Shift

This site started as a blog shortly after I had my first son in 2017. It was a way for me to reflect on my new role as a working mom and trying to find balance. When I look at my first post, I was only 5 months postpartum with my first son. I am now almost 9 months postpartum with my third son. The day I made this site feels both like yesterday and a lifetime ago. I still struggle with some of the same challenges that I did then in terms of work-life balance. I also have gained a lot of perspective 7 years into this parenting/working game.

Recently, I decided to leave full-time work for freelance work as a career coach/resume writer. While I was doing similar work in my last role, I wanted to find a new schedule that would work for my family while still staying engaged in my work. I write to you now about 3 months into my new role. I can happily say that leaving my full-time job was the right move. It was a leap of faith to leave a salaried role and transition our family to a 1.5 salary household instead of a 2 salary household. I am grateful to have a supportive husband that was on board for us making a shift that would better work for our family. I am also very grateful to my parents and in-laws who are amazing grandparents and support us with childcare a few days a week.

I share this to say that if you are feeling called to make a transition in your work life, that following your gut is usually the right move. Certainly it is important to think through logistics and how to navigate the move in a way that works for you and your family, but it is a worthwhile endeavor to explore other opportunities that are going to serve you and your life better.

A few months into freelancing and working with new clients, I have been rejuvenated by the thoughtful and talented professionals that I have worked with so far. They are serving their communities and their workforces in impactful ways and it is a honor to work along them as they transition into new roles or take stock of their options.

I am grateful to do work that helps others and reminds me of the importance of purpose, connection and community. If you are interested in connecting for resume or career coaching assistance, reach out to me at workinglivingwell@gmail.com.
